Reflection Week 11

Reflection Week 10
During this week, Miss Amreet taught us about writing style for commercial website. There are several point that I got from her. To develop an effective commercial writing style:

- Use shorter sentences.
- Use simpler sentence structures.
- Use active voice.
- Write from the point of view of the company.
- Write more unvocally. (The voice of the company is always already a social voice).
- Identify the agents of actions unless there is a good reason for hiding agency.
- Avoid nominalizing verbs. (changing verbs into nouns, i.e. "decide" into "decision.")
- Recommend action rather than refer to individual mental states.
- Avoid qualifiers that weaken recommendations or express doubt.
- Avoid self reference and references to individual states of mind lessons,
Reflection Week 9
During this week, Miss Amreet taught us on the important styles for informative websites. If you have an existing site, or plan to develop one in the
near future, it's important to understand the characteristics that can make or
break the effectiveness of your online investment. An unattractive or poorly
built site will do more to hurt your business than to help it.
Simplicity: The best way to keep visitors glued to your site is through
valuable content, good organization and attractive design. Keep your site
simple and well organized.
Fast-loading pages: A page should load in 20 seconds or less
via dial-up; at more than that, you'll lose more than half of your potential
visitors.
Minimal scroll: This is particularly important on the first
page. Create links from the main page to read more about a particular topic.
Even the Search Engines will reward you for this behavior.
Consistent layout: Site layout is extremely important for
usability. Use a consistent layout and repeat certain elements throughout the
site.
Prominent, logical navigation: Place your menu items at the top of your site, or above the
fold on either side. Limit your
menu items to 10 or fewer. Remember, your visitors are in a hurry -- don't make them hunt for
information.
Descriptive link text: Usability testing shows that long link text makes it much
easier for visitors to find their way around a site. Long, descriptive link
text is favored by Search
Engines, too. Back links are important to give users a sense of direction and to keep them from feeling
lost. Use a site map, and breadcrumbs, if necessary.
Cross-platform/browser compatibility: Different browsers
often have different rules for displaying content. At a minimum, you should
test your site in the latest versions of Internet Explorer (currently, versions
8 and 9), as well as Firefox and Safari.
Reflection Week 8
For this week, Miss Amreet asks us to listed the three good and bad websites. After searching and surfing, I got the information that she want as follows:

1)http://www.havenworks.com/
2)http://www.arngren.net/

3)http://ronoslund.com/

Reflection Week 7
During week 7, Miss Amreet teach us about the topic which is
writing style for the web. There are several information that i got during her
classes. First, use short paragraphs. Large blocks of text can look like walls,
and act as such to the user. Next, first paragraph should be brief, clear, and
to the point in order to quickly engage the user. Furthermore, write in an
inverted pyramid style.
Place the most important information at the top, extra
info toward the bottom. Not also that, don't waste space welcoming people to
the page. There is no need, and most users ignore any welcome text as filler.
Subsequently, you also need to name your page clearly. The page title and the
navigation title should match as closely as possible. Then, we may use bold and
italics sparingly. Bold should be used for headings and then sparingly for any
other emphasis. Too much bold makes text harder, not easier, to read and
differentiate.Last but not least, try to avoid exclamation points. We know
Hampshire is awesome! We love it! But exclamation points on websites make can
make it look unprofessional! Let the content speak for itself.

Compare and contrast essay.
Are computers a blessing or a curse?
The later half of the 20th century may be, to a large extend termed the electronic age. In a modern world marked by hustle and bustle and ceaseless activities, the physical efforts of man have gone to the background and he has become more and more dependent on machines for his everyday activities. From the housewife in the kitchen to the executive in the industry, everyone looks upon a machine as an able assistant. One of these is the computers.

When the computer is fed, it sorts out, stores and gives information on a variety of subject. Many problem of complicated nature are solved and it is even used to drive machines. It has been found so useful that the banking profesion is introducing the computer in every aspect of its activity. It is felt that maximum customer satisfaction can only be gained through the use it as much.

The greatest advantage in the use of computer is that it saves a lot of time and energy of man. Much time that could be spent in research work over a long period is saved through using the computer. It is also beneficial in development projects.
Computer science has become a popular branch of science. It has opened out new avenues for young men women to such an extend that there is a view that the fundamentals should be taught even to school-going children. However it is not as if the computer cannot make mistakes. Since it is a mechanical device, it is also fallible. The efficiency of this device will also depend upon the correct programming. If the programming is incorrect, the accuracy of the result cannot be guaranteed.
The computer has become such an integral part of our lives today that it has created a lot of job opportunities to the youth community especially who have a craze for computers. Its usage in many industries has increased the productivity and efficiency of machines which contribute much on industrial growth.
Computerization is yet another addiction. The question arises whether the computer would be a master or slave of man. It is a ticklish question, for it depends upon the manner in which it is used. In all probabilities, may go the way of all the machines invented so far. True enough, it is blessing to all humans.
